BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The United State Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced the TIGER Discretionary
Grants. The Department is referring to these grants as ‘‘Grants for Transportation Investment
Generating Economic Recovery’’ or ‘‘TIGER Discretionary Grants.’’ This notice requests that
applications for TIGER Discretionary Grants be submitted by September 15, 2009, from State and
local governments, including U.S. territories, tribal governments, transit agencies, port authorities,
other political subdivisions of State or local governments, and multi-State or multijurisdictional
applicants (‘‘Eligible Applicants’’). The funds provided by TIGER Discretionary Grants (‘‘Grant
Funds’’) will be awarded on a competitive basis to projects that have a significant impact on the
Nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. These grants will total 1.5 Billion and are available on a
very competitive bases from $ 20 million to $ 300 million (USDOT may waive the minimum for
smaller urban areas). No state will receive more than 20% (or ~ 300million) of the total funds.
ACTION REQUESTED:
The Transportation Policy Board (TPB), is requested to provide direction to staff on how to proceed with these grants.
